Delivering Next-Level Hydrogen Refuelling for Large-Scale Transport

The VHyTTA (Versatile Hydrogen Transfer for Transport Applications) project was officially launched during a Kick-Off meeting hosted by ACI Europe in Brussels. Bringing together 20 partners from 7 European countries, we are embarking on a 4-year European project dedicated to shaping the next generation of hydrogen refuelling solutions to decarbonise large-scale transport. Co-funded by the European Union and supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership with a total budget of €8M, VHyTTA will develop and demonstrate -at TRL7- two flexible, multipurpose refuelling station concepts for both compressed gaseous hydrogen (cGH₂) and liquid hydrogen (LH₂) – addressing the needs of aviation, maritime, and railroad transport sectors. Over the next 48 months, the consortium will: Build a fixed cGH₂ station for heavy-duty vehicles, containers & airport ground fleets Develop a mobile LH₂ refueller for aircraft and ships Create and validate digital twins of the systems Demonstrate the technologies at TRL7 Optimise logistics and value-chain integration for hydrogen hubs at airports With these innovations, VHyTTA aims to contribute to the strategic objective of achieving 4 GW of hydrogen production and distribution capacity and deploying more than 100 refuelling stations across Europe by 2030. Project forecasts even indicate that by 2035, 1,504 routes across Europe could adopt LH₂ powertrains, potentially reducing emissions by 33.6 million tonnes of CO₂. Our consortium is strongly committed to advancing these efforts – setting new standards for sustainable mobility and accelerating Europe’s transition to climate-neutral transport.
